The Botanical
Garden of
Ooty is
the backbone
of Ooty
tourism.
The Botanical
Garden dates
back to
1847 and
was laid
out by the
Marquis
of Tweedale.
This garden
is spread
out over
55 acres.
The garden
has such
a spectacular
collection
of flora
that it
is a delight
for any
Botanist.
The Botanical
Garden of
Ooty is
maintained
by the Department
of Horticulture
of the Government
of Tamilnadu.
The highlights
of the Botanical
Garden are
the well
maintained
lawns, a
20 million
year old
fossiled
tree, rare
species
of trees,
fern house
with a vast
range of
ferns and
orchids,
a colorful
collection
of flowering
bushes and
shrubs.
Another
attraction
is the Italian-style
garden bordering
a clear
pool. The
botanical
garden is
famous for
its summer
festival
where the
flower show
is held.
It is held
usually
during the
months of
May. The
Garden is
also famous
for the
Toda hill
called the
Toda mund.
This place
is important
in that
it gives
us a great
insight
into the
lives of
the original
tribals
of Ooty
called the
Todas.
You could
spend hours
and hours
in this
magnificent
garden and
still not
be bored.
